I know what some of you are thinking. It seems like an oxymoron to say “Unremarkable Miracle” but i am convinced that Mark was recording just such a miracle in His Gospel. Chapter eight begins with the “Feeding of the Four Thousand,” listen to this unremarkable telling of this event:

His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?” [5] “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied. [6] He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. [7] They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. [8] The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. [9] About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away,

Did you see the excitement, the marvel of the people, the awe of the disciples? No you didn’t it reads like page 14 below the fold of a small town newspaper. He gives thanks, they distribute it, the people were satisfied, and they picked up extra. Did you see that word that stuck me today? “Satisfied.” For the last few months I have worked in the world of retail where customer surveys rule, I know that nobody shoots for “satisfied.” We want the people to be amazed, impressed, extremely satisfied, or delighted.

So was the miracle “unremarkable”? No, it certainly was not. Jesus took their meager offerings and provided abundance, more on that next time. Luther wrote, “He richly and daily provide all that I need to support this body and life…” Miracle after miracle, unseen to us, normal, routine, because that is just what God does. But if only I would be so excited at his provision as to be “Satisfied.”

So often I find his remarkable provision as just more of the “same ol’, same ol'” But it is not. I pray today that the Spirit would open my eyes to be amazed, in awe, and wonder over the great provision and mighty miracles of our God.
