Today I stopped in a store I shop in quite frequently. As I came up to the check out the clerk acted as If I was really keeping her from something. When I gave my membership card and a discount card to her, I could tell she was really put out! I completed my transaction and I wished her a Merry Christmas. She said nothing, just turned and walked away.  I was bothered by the treatment I had received. I thought she showed a complete lack of customer care and I felt she was ungrateful I had come in.  I thought that I might need to take my business to another store next time.

I then sat down to work on my CHRISTmas Ponder and the Word’s of John came into my mind.  I was upset because a clerk in a store didn’t treat me, a customer well.  God came into the world, His word, which He created, and they were not just ungrateful, they were downright cruel and hateful toward him. It got me wondering how many time I have treated him with ungratefulness, how many times have I failed to recognize him in the lives of people all around me.  God did not “take his business elsewhere” He made my business His business. He took my ungratefulness all the way to the cross.

Even if we only consider the last 3 years, of his public ministry that is 1,068 days, 25,632 hours of ungratefulness by the ones he created, and the ones he came to save.  No wonder they call him Wonderful! No wonder I call him Lord! Sometimes I consider the incarnation and taking on humanity as his true suffering, but I am reminded is it so much bigger than that.  Which reminds me just how great his Love is for me.

Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, Love Divine,
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and Angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
Love Incarnate, Love Divine,
Worship we our Jesus,
But wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token,
Love be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.

poem by Christina Rossetti (published in 1885)

WHAT has God done for you which makes you feel grateful this Christmas?
