Today we have lots of reasons to reach for the big red panic button.  Maybe the election did not come out as you had hoped, maybe you were caught in the grips of an illness, or maybe you have recently lost a job.  Our first reaction is to hit the button and then enter scramble mode.  To plan our way out of the current situation, get a passport to Canada  fly to Mexico for a miracle cure, cash in our 401k, or something else rash.

My world has taken a tumble in the last few weeks with changes to health and more that caught me by surprise   I must admit I reached for the button, but the good news is our new house does not have one!  In the absence of the panic button I grabbed for the best planning tool I have.   I reached to my Christian wife of 26 years, my Bible, and the wise counsel of Christian Brothers and Sisters.

The message from all of them come straight from the lips of my God. “Steady On”  My God has given my wife, and my friends in Christ, along with the whole world a living and active and loving Word for Life!

Each morning for the last few days I have asked the Lord for a word – just a word – a single Word from Him.  Each day without fail I have heard a word.  Thanks to the wonders of the modern computer I have taken that single word and entered into my electronic Bible and scrolled through the verses.  Here are a few that I have found this week:

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (Romans 12:12 ESV)

but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31 ESV)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. (Psalms 51:10-13 ESV)

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. (John 14:1 ESV)

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord , who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. (Psalms 121:1-8 ESV)

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Colossians 3:12-15 ESV)

Make me to know your ways, O Lord ; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Remember your mercy, O Lord , and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord ! (Psalms 25:4-7 ESV)

Good and upright is the Lord ; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. For your name’s sake, O Lord , pardon my guilt, for it is great. (Psalms 25:8-11 ESV)

I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praises to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed. And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, (Psalms 71:22-24a ESV)

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. What is desired in a man is steadfast love, and a poor man is better than a liar. The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm. (Proverbs 19:21-23 ESV)

This beggars journey is one that shows me again and again of God’s great faithfulness and amazing ability to speak into my life.  In all of it he whispers to me “Fear not – Steady On.”  I pray the next time you feel the need to reach for the panic button you reach for the search button, and seek a Word from the Lord.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV)
