Our God is not limited by knowledge.
Listen to Paul, the great theologian of the church, as he writes about the knowledge of God in Romans 11;
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” Romans 11:33-34
These words come at the end of a very difficult to understand section of Romans. Paul struggles with the fact that the children of Israel have walked away from their covenant God. He tries to explain to us limited people about God’s election and the welcoming of the gentiles. This limitless God that Paul rejoices in has knowledge that covers all of our limited questions. His wisdom is beyond our questions about suffering and death, our questions about sin and broken relationships, even our questions about our past and our future.
Will you or I ever understand the mind of God? No. We call this the omniscience of God, His all knowledge. This knowledge is not limited by space or time. His view of our world and our lives is from a much larger scale then our vision or knowledge. Because our God is not limited by knowledge, we can trust his plans.
I must admit this year has made me wonder more about God’s plan for me and my family more then any other time in my life. I have come to understand the illustration often used of a tapestry. We have an up close, small vision from the back of the tapestry as the weaver works. We see him sometimes work with dark colors and course textures. These seem to be layered with beautiful bright colors and soft textures. Only when we are able to step back and see the front side of the tapestry will we understand the beauty woven by the artist.
