life is hardI still don’t know why I am surprised when life become hard, some times even very hard.  It can be the choices we make that make our life hard. Sometime it is the circumstances we are caught in that makes our life hard.  Many times life hits us completely out of the blue and catches us by surprize and life becomes hard, or we might have even known the road ahead was going to be hard. However, knowing the road was going to be hard does not make it any easier, you just might have braced yourself a bit more the journey.

My wife, who some of you know, is not a violent woman.  I’m reminded of the period of time  a few years after we adopted our son, who came to us with great joy and a bag full of challenges that we knew about, was in many respects making life hard (not by his choice).  During this time people would ask Shirley “how are things going?” and she would tell them “Life is very hard these days.”  They would often respond, not knowing just what to say, with a simple, “yea, but you did know it was going to be hard.”   My wife on one of those days, after one of those conversations, said to me “if one more person says “yea, but you did know it was going to be hard” I going to have to hurt them.   We used to joke around our house that we were going to get her a shirt that read, “Im a parent of a special needs child, DON’T MESS WITH ME.”

Personally for me and my family, the last few months have been hard. It was one of those times that seemed to come out of the blue and knocked us off our teet.  In that great 20×20 hindsight I see know that I should have seen it coming and reacted sooner.  We will not dwell on that point very long. But in these hard months being us, and through the hard ones ahead I am reminded of a simple truth….

Life can be hard, but God is Good.

Challenges can confront us, but God is Good.

Choices can harm us, but God is Good.

Difficulties can surprise us, but God is Good.

You and others may ask, “How you know God is Good?”  Trust me there is not enough space on the internet nor words to tell the story of all the ways that God has demonstrated his goodness, just in my life and the life of those around me. Don’t just take my word for it, listen to these God breathed words from “The Word” for yourself:

4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 (NIV)

1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. Psalm 73:1 (NIV)

8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:5 (NIV)

3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. Psalm 135:3 (NIV)

9 The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. Psalm 145:9 (NIV)

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; Lamentations 3:25 (NIV)

7 The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him, Nahum 1:7 (NIV)

33 (Jesus said) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
