I have been amazing myself lately by spending time about 3-5 times a week at Snap Fitness. Most days I go early, right after I roll out of bed. This is a time when there are typically 4-5 other people up at that crazy time doing the same thing. Last week however I slept in a couple of morning and went to the fitness center after dinner. It was a whole new world up there. in fact on one night I was the only one in the place when I arrived. It was nice, I muted all the TV’s except for the one by my treadmill and I turned on some mindless show to pass the time.
About ten minutes after I started I heard the door click. I looked and saw the door open about four inches and close, then a second click and again the door opened about four inches and closed. It wasn’t until this happened two other times in the next 30 minutes that it dawned on my what was happening. Many insurance companies offer a rebate on your health club membership, but only if you use it so many times a month. (My company does not – so I exercise for the pure pleasure of it – yea right) These mysterious clicks and open doors were people stopping by to exercise, or at least that what the record would show.
I shared this story last Sunday morning in the High School Bible Class I lead and to my delight, one of the students spoke up right away and said, “Isn’t that fraud?” I replied, “Yes it is.” Some times I think we grow numb to the small ways we fail to live a Holy life, in the ways that are just as simple as the click of a door. But we are called to live a life that shows the world who we are by the example we set.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
1 Peter 2:9-12 (NIV)
Live a life that demands an explanation! Don’t just click the door – come on in!
