IDENTITY THEFT – You can hardly open a newspaper today, wait – who open’s newspapers? You can hardly go online today without having a story about some sort of security breach at your favorite company. Every day our identity seems to be free for the taking. Each time I get a letter from another company that my identity might have been compromised I get another year of “credit protection” I think I am covered now until the year 2135 or when Jesus returns whichever comes first. (I pray it is Jesus!)

There are commercials about how to lock down our information to make sure no one can get into it. You can spend all the money you want, your identity is already compromised, or at least mine is, and no amount of money will get it back.

I must admit it is not so much that my identity is has been taken, as I have surrendered my identity.  I have allowed my identity to be shaped by the world, by my own selfish human nature, and by the great deceiver himself, Satan.

Each day the world seems to tell me who I am, that I am a failure, unprepared, or misinformed. I tell myself I could do better, that I don’t have what it takes, that my willpower is gone. Satan tells me that it’s all up to me I might as well just keep my head down and try to get through this life on my own. Sometimes we try to live up to someone else’s identity – we want to be like our hero or role model, but often this is at the expense of no longer being us, or worse yet our role model turns out to be no one we want to emulate our life after.

There is a way to protect your identity from being stolen from us or surrendered by us.

Recognise the truth about who you came from: You were created by a loving God who created you in his image “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 (ESV) This does not mean you look like God, it means that you were created in the integrity of God, seeking and desiring a relationship with him. This image was broken by our fall into sin, but even in our brokenness, we reflect the glory of our creator.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.  My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. “Psalm 139:13-15 (ESV)

Recognize the truth about who you are in Christ:  God doesn’t leave us in our brokenness. He sent his son Jesus to pay for our sin and to restore the relationship and with us. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. “ Jeremiah 31:3 (ESV)
We are of great value to God. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” 1 John 3:1 (ESV) The Word of God knows that the world will not see our value for what it is, and will try to tell us we are less than we are, they will try to steal our identity from us.

It should not surprise us that the world doesn’t recognize us, we did not recognize God when he first came to us as the Word made flesh. “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, “John 1:11-12 (ESV) You are a child of God!

Recognize the truth about who you are becoming: Being in Christ is more than just a title given to us it is new hope, new joy, new life – we are a new creation in Christ. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) This is new right now in this life in this time, we are made new but like every good infomercial, “Wait There Is More!” “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”1 John 3:2 (ESV) We will be even more than we are now, we will not just be imitators of Christ following his example in our new life of faith – WE WILL BE LIKE HIM.

Let no one, not the world, or even your own selfish nature, and especially not satan, the father of lies steal your Identity from you.

QUESTION TO PONDER: How is the World working to steal your Identity? How do we surrender our identity? What lies have been whispered into your ear by Satan, that confuses your image of yourself? Share with someone near you – who you really are in Christ – and embrace the amazing truth that you are a newborn child of the King growing into his likeness more and more each day!
